Technical Information: Cap Materials : Septa Materials
Septa Materials
Closure refers to the assembled combination of a cap and septa. At this time, Worldwide Glass Resources offers only assembled closures; separate caps or septa are not available.
Worldwide Glass Resources offers closures with the following septa materials:

Notes |
Polypropylene (PP) |
Maximum Temperature Range is 0°C to 135°C. |
Gas, disinfectants or autoclave are recommended. |
acetone, ethyl acetate, methanol, isobutyl alcohol, methanol, and methyl ethyl ketone. |
cyclohexane, ethers, dichlorobenzene, pentanes, methylene chloride, and trichlorobenzene. |
For one time use only; not resealable. |
PP is a rigid plastic that is translucent or may be tinted to provide colored material. |
Polyethylene (PE) |
Maximum temperature use is 120°C. |
Gas, radiation or disinfectants are recommended. |
acids, alcohol, and bases. |
benzene, chlorobenzene, acetic anhydride |
For one time use only; not resealable. |
PE is a flexible translucent plastic. |
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) |
Maximum temperature Range is -265°C to 250°C. |
Autoclave, gas, dry heat and radiation may be used. |
aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, oil, gasoline, animal and vegetable oils, acids, and alkalies. |
|
For one time use only; not resealable. |
|
PTFE/Butyl and Molded PTFE/Butyl |
Maximum Temperature Range is -40°C to 120°C. |
|
alcohols, animal and vgetable oils, acids |
aliphatic hydrocrabons, aromatic hydrocarbons, oil, gasoline |
Good resealability. |
Molded PTFE/Butyl varies from its PTFE/Butyl counterpart in that its PTFE lamination is limited to the center in order for the butyl to contact the glass rim and create a tight seal. |
Note: Before puncturing, septa have chemical compatibility of PTFE; after puncturing, septa may have chemical compatibility of Butyl. |
||||||
PTFE/Red Rubber |
Temperature range: -40°C to 110°C. |
|
ACN, Acetone, DMF, alcohols, Diethylamine, DMSO, Phenol |
Chlorinated solvents, aromatics, hydrocarbons, carbon disulfide |
Moderate resealability. |
Most popular and economical choice for GC. Used primarily for routine analysis in GC with FID, TCD and FPD detectors. |
Note: Before puncturing, septa have chemical compatibility of PTFE; after puncturing, septa may have chemical compatibility of Red Rubber. |
||||||
PTFE/Silicone |
Temperature range -40°C to 200°C. |
Autoclaveable. |
Alcohols, acetone, ether, DMF, DMSO |
ACN, THF, chloroform, pyridine, benzene, toluene, hexane, heptanes |
Resists coring. |
Ideal for use in most HPLC applications and GC applications where resealability and purity are critical. |
Note: Before puncturing, septa have chemical compatibility of PTFE; after puncturing, septa may have chemical compatibility of Silicone. |

PTFE/Silicone/PTFE |
Temperature range -40°C to 200°C |
Autoclaveable. |
Alcohols, acetone, ether, DMF, DMSO |
Chlorosilanes, ACN, THF, chloroform, pyridine, benzene, toluene, hexane, heptanes |
Excellent resistance to coring. |
|
Note: Before puncturing, septa have chemical compatibility of PTFE; after puncturing, septa may have chemical compatibility of Silicone. |

Aluminum Foil/Silicone |
Maximum Temperature Range is -60°C to 220°C. |
|
|
acetonitrile, benzene, chloroform, hexane, pyridine, tetrahydrofuran, toluene. |
Very good resealability. |
Used in sealing applications where non-permeability and low volatility are required; aluminum layer provides effective vapor barrier. |
VitonTM |
Maximum Temperature is -23°C to 204°C. |
Autoclave, microwave, dry heat, gas, radiation, and disinfectants may be used. |
Chlorinated solvents, benzene, toluene, alcohols, hexane, heptane |
DMF, DMSO, ACN, THF, pyridine |
Very good resealability. |
